Fruits of Thailand - 5 - Custard Apples - 'noi naa' - น้อยหน่า

These beauties originally came from Central America 1, and the white flesh is absolutely delicious. The Cherimoya, also spelled Chirimoya, is the fruit of the species Annona cherimola, which generally is thought to be native to Ecuador, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia, then transported to the Andes and Central America. Today, Cherimoya is grown throughout South Asia, Central America, South America, California, Hawaii, southern Europe and northern Africa.

Author, Mark Twain, called the Cherimoya "the most delicious fruit known to man." 2

The creamy texture of the flesh gives the fruit its secondary name, Custard Apple. Custard Apples, or Sugar Apples, come in many shapes - heart shaped, oblong or irregular. The size ranges from 7 to 12 cm. When ripe, the fruit skin is brown or yellowish, with red highlights and a varying degree of reticulation, depending on variety, and flakes away when soft, and peeled by hand. Best when they seem 'over-ripe', because then, I think, they are sweetest.
